Featured here is a 5.34 carat pear shaped cabochon opal with flashes of green red and yellow. This fine opal measures11 mm wide, 51 mm long, 8.5 mm deep with a total depth of 77.3%. This Ethiopian opal has been cut here in our shop by precision gemstone cutter, Steve Moriarty, owner of our custom design jewelry store, Moriarty's Gem Art, located in Crown Point, Indiana USA! This opal gemstone has been sourced from Ethiopia. This is a fairly new source discovered in 2008. Ethiopia produces hydrophane opals, meaning they absorb liquids. This makes these precious opals resistant to a cracking that is caused by drying out, called crazing. If your opal gemstone gets wet, it will turn a milky white color. Within a couple of days the opal will dry out and its vivid colors will be restored. You will want to be cautious when applying products such as lotions, perfumes, hair sprays, hair dyes, etc. Once your opal soaks up any of these types of products there is a good possibility your opal will be ruined beyond repair. Work one on one with our in house, award winning jewelry designer to create a one of a kind setting to house your loose opal. The opal will be set here by our jewelers as well.
